Things to Do in Budapest

If you’re heading to Budapest in August and you’re into music, you will love the Sziget Festival over at Obudai Island. Here you will find a huge variety of music and a great cultural experience for a reasonable price.

For the thespian travelling to Budapest, you will be pleased with the rich performing arts scene here and will find that the best times to visit are between September and June. Places to visit include the Hungarian State Opera House which is known by the locals for its traditional opera and ballet shows. They may not match up to the Royal Ballet, but are still a worthy night out. If you’re after a venue and a performance a little more to modern tastes, the Trafo House of Contemporary Arts is the building for you. Here you will see a fantastic show and may even choose to combine it with a trip to the disco hall and bar upstairs.

Many American’s choose to visit Budapest for the baths; a remaining part of Turkish culture that has been adapted by the Hungarians into something of their own. If you are feeling confident, the best way to experience this is to go to a traditional public bath with the locals. They can be a little complicated so you are advised to do a little reading up before hand and maybe ask about protocol on the reception. Two well known baths here are the Gellert Baths and the Szechenyi Spa.

Historians may find that they prefer to spend their time in the Castle Hill area, as this is where the main sights are found. The most popular place to visit is the Royal Palace where you will find the National Gallery, Fishermans Bastion and Matthias Church. According to their website, ‘The Hungarian National Gallery is the largest public collection documenting and presenting the rise and development of the fine arts in Hungary’ and has good disabled access should you need it.

If you are staying slightly further afield in Pest, you may want to check out the Parliament Building which looks over the Danube and St Stephen Cathedral which is considered to be an important example of neoclassical architecture.

For the adventurous tourist a wonderful change to historical and cultural tours is a trip caving. There are a few caves in Budapest, the most well known and visited though are the Szemlohgyi Cave which is suitable for the whole family including wheelchair users, and the Pal-volgyi-Matyas-hegui cave which is more heavy going with very narrow passages. Both caves are well lit and easy to access from above ground with only 15 minutes on foot between them. If you would like to do both in a day it is possible to get a joint ticket for the standard tourist areas of the cave which make it a more economical option. Locals do suggest that if you choose to go on an extended and more strenuous tour you will get to experience much more than the standard tours.
